    Cantaloupe

    Also known as

    • Rockmelon
    • Nutmeg Melon

Cantaloupe is normally eaten as a fresh fruit, as a salad, or as a dessert with ice-cream or custard. The flesh is the orange, sugary and fragrant. It keeps well when stored in a cool, dry place and ripens after several days in a warm room.

    • Honeydew Melon

    Galia Melon

Galia melon is a cantaloupe-honeydew cross, similar to cantaloupe, though larger, and with deep green flesh. Most varieties have fairly large fruit compared to other melons (approx 1kg). Like any melon, they are sweet and aromatic, with a flavour more like a cantaloupe than a honeydew.

      Honeydew Melon

Honeydew melons have pale green flesh, while the smooth peel ranges from greenish to yellow. The flesh is thick, juicy and sweet. A perfectly ripe honeydew will yield just a bit to pressure at the blossom end and have a sticky, velvety rind.

        Kiwano

        Also known as

        • Horned Melon
        • Melano

Kiwano looks like an oval melon with horns, and is very decorative. When picked green and allowed to ripen to an orange color, the fruit tastes like a mix of cucumber and kiwifruit, and when fully ripe has an orange rind with spikes. When picked fully ripe, it has a banana-like taste. Its construction is similar to passion fruit or pomegranates.

        Substitutes

        • Cucumber (the flesh lacks Kiwano's brilliant colour)
        • Other Melon
      • Watermelon

        Watermelon

Fresh watermelon may be eaten in a variety of ways and is also often used to flavour summer drinks and smoothies. Because of its high pectin content, watermelon is popular as a constituent of jams, jellies and preserves. Watermelons come in a variety of sizes and colours, but the flavour remains largely the same.

          Substitutes

          • Honeydew Melon
        • Yellow Melon

          Yellow Melon

          Also known as

          • Korean Melon
          • Dua Gan

Yellow melons are oblong-shaped and small. They have a bright yellow outer skin with white ribs covering a firm textured cream-colored flesh. The firm textured flesh has a sweet, delicate flavour, similar to cantaloupe.
